The new format for the Gerry Marshall Trophy sees two intense heats followed by a grand finale, with the grid made up of the top 15 from said heats. In the sub 3.0-litre race, the first of the weekend, it was a hot hatch scrap, with a Golf GTI battling it out against Ford Fiestas, Metros, Minis and more.
It made for some spectacular racing, as these micro machines risked it all in the name of preserving momentum. The Datapost Fiesta had a massive off mid-chase and Nick Swift in his Mini succumbed to steering problems. It was an emotional win for Jim Morris in the Golf GTI, 40 years on from his dad’s class win at Mallory Park in the very same car.
