One of the most intense sounds you’ll hear at Goodwood doesn’t come from F1 cars, Le Mans racers or anything else. It doesn’t even come from anything on four wheels. It’s the screaming bikes of the Hailwood Trophy, with both four- and two-stroke machinery packing a grid.
As they took to the track like a swarm of wasps the nimble two-strokes looked strong around the bends. But the sheer muscle of the 750CC four-stroke machines meant the heavier bikes could fight back when the black stuff straightened out ahead of them. Still Gary Vines on the number 23 Yamaha rung the neck of that little 250CC to stay out ahead for as long as possible, keeping the herd behind at bay and bunching up the order. In effect he gave us all some great battling before he eventually relinquished his hold on the lead.
