What a rollercoaster of a weekend Jake Hill has had. The BTCC racer was at the 80th Members’ Meeting presented by Audrain Motorsport with his Ford Capri, and set pole-winning time in Saturday’s qualifying. So far so good. But he also embedded the Ford in the tyre wall, and the damage looked serious. Sitting head in hands on the tyre wall, he probably thought his weekend was over.
His team worked tirelessly to get the Capri back in shape for the race later that day. Well, roughly the right size. The crumpled front corner and rippled side panels told their own story. His determination to make the team’s effort worthwhile was evident the moment the flag dropped.
Despite having a mirror full of Chevrolet Camaro Z28 for the whole race – first the white car or Olivier Hart and later the Bastos-livered machine of Rob Huff – he kept his rivals at bay and took the chequered flag. He had to use the Capri’s later braking and more nimble handling to stave off advances from the gruntier Z28s and their greater straight-line ability. The result? A lesson in car control, balancing at the limit and four-wheel drifting. Our favourite bit probably the late braking into Lavant Corner and the perfectly executed drift to the clipping point lap after lap.
Watch the full race here and we promise you’ll be as mesmerised as we were.
