After hard-fought battles in the Gordon Spice Trophy heats, where the larger capacity cars ran in a different race to the smaller machines, the fastest cars from the two grids were combined for the final. This meant there was everything from Minis to Chevrolet Camaro Z28s in the final race of the weekend at the 80th Members’ Meeting presented by Audrain Motorsport. A thrilling race was guaranteed.
Heat 1 winner and BTCC star Jake Hill set off into an early lead, but was trailed by an ever-growing cloud of smoke that eventually saw him black-flagged. It turned out that the dipstick hadn’t been replaced... Hill had his work cut out to claw his way back up the field when he re-entered the race.
It left World Touring Car Championship Rob Huff and Jack Tetley to scrap it out up front, both in closely matched Camaros. Sadly both cars were not destined to make it to the end. A brave move by Tetley around the outside of Huff ended with the Camaro on its roof at Woodcote, a sideways Huff just avoiding getting tangled up. Huff finished second on the road but claimed the victory on countback because the red flag was shown before they crossed the line.
There was so much going on that it’s a wonder our video editors managed to distil the Gordon Spice Trophy final into a two-minute highlights. What a way to round off the action at the 80th Members’ Meeting.
