The Gurney Cup features some of the fastest racing cars to be seen competing at the 80th Members’ Meeting presented by Audrain Motorsport, with Ford GT40s battling Elvas, Lotuses a unique roofless Cobra and more. While Gordon Shedden put in a spectacular attempt at pole position, it felt like nothing was stopping Dario Franchitti from getting the top spot in ‘Tesie’ the GT40.
While Lynn barrelled off into the lead from the off and put up a great defence on the way through Madgwick, it was on the way towards St. Mary’s, out of Fordwater, that he ran wide allowing Griffiths and Kirkaldy through in their GT40 and Chevron B8.
It’s a simultaneously long yet short race, though, where there’s time to make up if you’re consistent, yet very little time to recover from mistakes. And make a mistake Gordon Shedden did down the Lavant straight as he put it off at the kink while trying to make an overtake, lost it after a lock up and eased it into the tyre wall backwards at Woodcote.
With 20 minutes to go that put them back in third, behind Franchitti and Andrew Hall, who had aleady made a pitstop. From there the three-time Indy 500 winner was free to press on and rack up the laps. Did he keep it up all the way to the chequered flag? Watch on in the full race to find out…
