After switching from motorcycles to cars, Achille Varzi had terrific success in Grand Prix racing for Alfa Romeo, Auto Union and Bugatti in the pre-war era. The new-for-2017 Varzi Trophy celebrates his successes with a race for French and Italian cars raced up until 1939.
The grid served up treats including Bugatti Type 35s, numerous Maserati models, Alfa Romeos, Delahayes and even a Talbot-Lago. There was a real spread of ages, too, with the oldest car, one of the Bugatti Type 35s, dating from 1925.
In the race, Michael Gans spun his Maserati V8RI twice but recovered both times and came home in a respectable fourth. The podium was taken by Christian Gläsel (first in his Alfa Romeo Tipo B), Sean Danaher (second, Maserati 6CM) and Julian Majzub (third, Bugatti Type 35).
It's all in the highlights video above.
