If there’s one time and place in motorsport history that receives almost wall-to-wall adulation as the ‘you just had to be there’ era, it’s the Super Touring age the British Touring Car Championship delightfully served up throughout the 1990s.
Be in no doubt, this was the BTCC’s zeitgeist. Huge car manufacturer interest combined with a great set of homologation rules, ever-expanding budgets, consistent TV coverage and frankly, some superb blood-and-thunder battles on track meant that it was often pulling in crowds and viewing figures in the UK to rival Formula 1.
And at the 74th Members’ Meeting presented by Audrain Motorsport, we celebrated the golden age of the BTCC in style, with a huge demonstration of the 90s Super Touring legends. 16 memorable cars including Frank Biela’s ex-works Audi A4 Quattro, Rickard Rydell’s 1998 Volvo S40, Jean Christophe Boullion’s 1999 Renault Laguna, and the Honda Accord of Le Mans legend Tom Kristensen, which incidentally, was the last car to win to Super Touring rules in 2000. Which one brings back the most memories for you?
