Jason Plato’s more recent BTCC career might not have been packed with the success of his earlier years, but it’s fair to say he still knows how to drive a car fast. Evidence of this can be seen in how he wrestled a Boss 302 Mustang around the Motor Circuit in qualifying for the Gerry Marshall Trophy at the 79th Members’ Meeting presented by Audrain Motorsport. Oversteer at every corner? Of course.
In the week where Plato announced he would be retiring from the BTCC at the end of the 2022 season, he put the menacing black and red V8 Ford on pole with a time of 1 minute 26.050 seconds, more than half a second up on the next car, a Camaro Z28.
The sound is totally over the top, made all the more sweet by the fact the V8 Mustang is surrounded by other V8 racers. The car control, on the other hand, is supreme. A small lock-up on corner entry? No problem. An armful of opposite lock in the middle of and on corner exit? A doddle to deal with. Driving a Mustang of any description at pace isn’t a simple task, but Plato just makes it look so easy.
