Here’s something fun for you. Goodwood lap record-holder, top peddler and all-round top bloke Nick Padmore, is arguably fairly seasoned at the wheel of seriously powerful period racing machinery. After all, he took that lap record at the wheel of a Lola T70 Spyder.
So what happens when you stick him behind the wheel of something as humble and, compared to what he’s used to, somewhat underendowed, as a 1965 Mini Cooper S? We imagine the disparity is somewhat frustrating.
That suspicion is compounded upon watching the video above, where Padmore is having his wicked way with said Mini. With the valves dancing around on the bonnet, he exercises a “where lacking in power, add fearless cornering” tactic. It’s fair to say he is utterly wringing it out, and holding off more potent machinery rather well. As we can see, that lap was a 1:37 – a 'mere' 19 seconds off the pace of his T70 lap. Come on Nick! Toe down!
