We’ve written a lot about the Betty Richmond Trophy since the 77th Members’ Meeting back in 2019, but for good reason: it was spectacular. And so, if we’re given any opportunity to write about it again ,we will. So how about live onboard footage from the winner’s car? Yep, that’ll do nicely.
On Saturday there were two separate 20-minute, 30-Mini heats, with the fastest 15 from each race put through to a 20-minute, 30-car final on Sunday. During that final it looked as though there were four cars in the running for a podium spot, including Ian Curley who’d taken pole, Jonathan Lewis, Nick Padmore and Nick Swift.
This is the live onboard view from Nick Swift, and what makes it so good isn’t just that he’s fighting for the lead for almost the whole race, or that he gives a cheery wave out of the window to his rivals every now and then for a laugh. It’s that as lead-man Nick Padmore gets ever so slightly onto the grass down into Woodcote, and then Swift pulls into the lead, crosses the line and wins, you can hear the most almighty scream of jubilation. Honestly, you’d think Swift had just saved the deciding penalty in a World Cup final.
