With the sun setting and the cars’ headlights ablaze, we were transported to Le Mans at the turn of the millennium by the stunning GT1 demonstration the formed the curtain call to day one of the 80th Members’ Meeting presented by Audrain Motorsport.
The spread of endurance machines dated from 1998 to 2007 and made for a spectacular sight in the gloaming. As the sun set and light continued to fade, the cars’ headlights became all the more pronounced as tthey pounded around the circuit. But the sight was only part of the spectacle. The noise added a whole extra dimension to the experience.
And what a variety of sounds were treated to. The high-revving V12s of the Aston Martin DBR9s sound like superbikes turned up to 11 and are a real contrast to the bassy low-tempo thump of the Chevrolet Corvettes, which appeared in both C5R and C6 forms. Sticking with big-capacity American muscle with the engine up front, there were also three Chrysler Vipers. Perhaps you favour the sight and sound of a Ferrari 550 GTS, or more left-field machines such as the Marcos LM600, Saleen S7R or Lister Storm.
