Every Goodwood event is rich in memorable moments. From historic cars, famous drivers to epic on-track battles, there’s never a shortage of exceptional motorsport moments. Narrowing down the first day of the 80th Members’ Meeting presented by Audrain Motorsport to a top ten wasn’t easy, but someone had to do it. After much debate, here’s what made our final list.
We make no apologies for the fact that no fewer than three saloon car moments made it into our top ten. BTCC driver Jake Hill’s qualifying session in his Ford Capri was nothing short of spectacular with drifts aplenty as he lapped at a pole-setting time for heat one of the Gordon Spice Trophy. Heat two gives us the other two highlights: one from the start of the race, the other being the close battle between the Volkswagen Golf GTI of Jim Morris and the Mini 1275GT of Nick Swift.
BTCC racers Rob Huff and Gordon Shedden provided a close Ford GT40 battle in the Gurney Cup. Another unmissable GT40 moment is watching the Roadster in action. Sticking with endurance racers, Tom Kristensen was reunited with his 2003 Le Mans-winning Bentley Speed 8. Seeing the car at speed evoked memories of La Sarthe, as did the GT1 demonstration that ran into the sunset. Spectacular stuff.
The Brabham BT52 demonstration was part of our 75 years of Goodwood celebration. In the circuit’s testing era, Nelson Picquet is said to have set the fastest-ever lap here at Goodwood. It’s unconfirmed but has become part of Goodwood lore.
The S.F. Edge was always destined to make the top ten, with a close finish set up by a back-marker in the final moments of the race.
