Hot topics ahead of the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix

This weekend’s big news concerns the drivers’ market, as it’s been confirmed that Sergio Pérez will remain at Red Bull through to 2026 amid rumours his seat was vulnerable. The Mexican, who finished second in the drivers’ championship in 2023 and has achieved four podiums so far this season, said he was “really happy” to commit his future to Red Bull, and wants to pay back their trust “with excellent results on tack, and off track.” After a DNF in Monaco, now’s the perfect time for Pérez to put in a strong performance.

As one seat gets locked down, another becomes available – this week we learned that Esteban Ocon will be leaving Alpine at the end of the season, after five years with the team. Alpine team principal Bruno Famin warned there would be “consequences” after Ocon clashed with team-mate Pierre Gasly in Monaco. However, Ocon’s departure comes at the conclusion of his contract, anyway, though at this stage it leaves him vulnerable to a downward move at Haas, Sauber, or Williams if he is to keep his spot on the grid next year.

On the track, Ferrari and McLaren have brought the fight in recent weeks; victories for Lando Norris in Miami and Leclerc in Monaco have challenged Red Bull’s dominance, as well as Carlos Sainz’s win earlier in the season in Australia. Securing consistent wins and podiums between them has seen Verstappen’s lead at the top of the drivers’ championship narrow, albeit by a small margin. The RB20 remains the car to beat on track, though, and in Canada Verstappen will be out to put a stop to any further challenge to his crown. In the constructors’ championship, however, the situation is much tighter. Red Bull lead Ferrari by only 24 points, so if they want to secure a third title in a row a strong team performance is needed more than ever.

When can I watch the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix?

Action at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve begins on Friday, with free practice one at 18:30 UK time (13:30 local time), followed by free practice two at 22:00 (17:00). Saturday sees the final practice session commence at 17:30 (12:30) ahead of qualifying at 21:00 (16:00). Lights out for the Canadian Grand Prix is at 19:00 (14:00) on Sunday 9^th June.

Which series are supporting in Canada?

There is no action from Formula 2, Formula 3, or F1 Academy this weekend. Instead, F1 will be joined by the Porsche Carrera Cup running across the weekend. F2, F3, and the F1 Academy will be returning to action in Barcelona in two weeks’ time.
