Kicking off a big week of F1 car launches, Aston Martin has revealed its new challenger for the 2024 F1 season. The AMR24 is said to represent an evolution of the AMR23 that proved hugely competitive during the first half of last year in the hands of star driver Fernando Alonso.
This is the first car built at the new £200million AMRTC factory that features a brand-new wind tunnel, which the team hopes will offer renewed focus to the design of its new car, which is “lighter and more aerodynamically efficient” than its predecessor.
In terms of updates, the nose and front wings are overhauled, the sidepods have been re-worked, with wider inlets and more pronounced sculpting towards the rear. There has also been a switch to pushrod rear suspension.
Aston Martin Team Principal Mike Krack said almost every area of the AMR24 “has been refined and improved, building on our strengths and taking onboard the lessons of the previous campaign.”
Technical Director Dan Fallows added: “I would call the AMR24 a strong evolution of last year’s car and it does look quite different with many new parts to give us a strong platform for development. The chassis design is new, as well as the nose, front wing, front suspension and rear suspension.
“Another area of focus has been to broaden the car’s operating window. We have focused on more versatility for a wider range of specific circuit characteristics. We want a race car that is more of an all-rounder.”
“Work has been done on both ends of the car’s suspension. The front will work more efficiently alongside the front wing, and aero work has been done at the rear to optimise our layout in that area.”
Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll return to drive for Aston Martin in 2024. Alonso scored eight podiums in 2023, and arrived in Bahrain as the closest challenger to Red Bull. Stroll struggled to keep up with his illustrious team-mate in the wake of a cycling accident weeks before the season was due to start.
Alonso said: “I am incredibly proud of this team and what has been achieved in such a short space of time. Not only the progress on the track, but the investment in all areas off-track at the AMRTC.
“The whole team has worked flat-out on getting the AMR24 ready for the new season, but there are so many questions to answer in testing and the first few races. I am excited to get in the cockpit and start my second season in green.”
Stroll, who will compete in his sixth season for the team, said: “We’re still a young team, but we’re growing up fast. There’s that hunger and belief when you walk around the campus – a credit to all of the amazing people working here.
“We all want to push on from what we achieved last year, especially in the final part of the season when we made some strong progress - learning more about the car. I think that sets us up nicely for the new season and I can’t wait to get going.”
