Audi has confirmed its plan to join Formula 1 in 2026 as a power unit supplier. The announcement was made during a press conference at this weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix, and it ends a protracted period of speculation that the Volkswagen Group was interested in joining F1.
Audi noted that the announcement of the new power unit regulations for 2026, which increase reliance on electric power and also see a move to 100 per cent sustainable fuels, was a key factor in its decision to join.
Speaking at the press conference, Chairman of the Board of Management of Audi AG Markus Duesmann said: “Motorsport is an integral part of Audi’s DNA. Formula 1 is both a global stage for our brand and a highly challenging development laboratory.
“With the new rules, now is the right time for us to get involved. After all, Formula 1 and Audi both pursue clear sustainability goals.”
Work is already underway at Audi Sport’s Neuberg facility to begin developing the new power unit before its entry in 2026.
As yet there has been no confirmation as to which team Audi will be working with, but there is an expectation that it will be taking over the Sauber outfit, which is currently racing under the Alfa Romeo brand.
Speaking of the announcement Stefano Domenicali, F1 President and CEO, said: “This is a major moment for our sport that highlights the huge strength we have as a global platform that continues to grow.
“It is also a big recognition that our move to sustainably fuelled hybrid engines in 2026 is a future solution for the automotive sector. We are all looking forward to seeing the Audi logo on the grid and will be hearing further details from them on their plans in due course.”
