Emilia Romagna Grand Prix cancelled

The 2023 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix set to be held at the Imola circuit will not go ahead due to incessant rain fall that has caused serious flooding in the surrounding areas of northern Italy.

Doubts were first raised about the running of the race this weekend on Tuesday, when F1 teams, drivers and personnel were instructed not to enter the venue as the weather continued to deteriorate. It means that F1 will not reconvene until next weekend at the Monaco Grand Prix.

Imola is situated a few metres away from the Santerno river, which burst its banks and left the paddocks completely flooded. The flooding has caused thousands of people to be evacuated from their homes, and several teams have since put out calls for fundraising to help those who have been affected.

The cancellation of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix means Max Verstappen retains his championship lead over team-mate Sergio Perez. Meanwhile Mercedes, who had been expected to introduced a raft of new updates to the W14 car at Imola, with hopes of closing the performance gap to Red Bull, will have to wait until next weekend in Monaco to show their latest hand.
