The second day of our wonderful Members’ Meeting Favourite Moments stream was a brilliant cacophony of awesomeness.
It’s hard to pick out what we enjoyed the most, but as we seem to have set ourselves that task, here goes.
You can see our five amazing moments from Saturday here.
This is the fastest race that Goodwood has ever seen. A field of just ultra-fast Can-Am monsters storming their way round the Motor Circuit. During that race, which was won by GRR regular Nick Padmore, was this battle between Padmore, in an ex-John Surtees Lola T70 Spyder, and Jay Esterer in the extraordinary Chinook. Both cars are incredibly fast in a straight line, but a little on the edge when it comes to the twisty bits. So it’s fortunate that Padmore and Esterer are both excellent drivers, able to stay inches apart without causing any real danger. It makes for a brilliant fight.
What kinds of things does a four-time IndyCar Champion and three-time Indy 500 winner do when they retire? Drive basically any old racing car they wish of course. And so, at the 74th Goodwood Members’ Meeting, Dario Franchitti got to drive the Lotus 88. A car so technologically advanced (it has two chassis…) that it was almost immediately banned in period.
The BTCC figured this out ages ago. The best way to make a touring car race exciting is to reverse the grid. So that’s what we did to the results of the Gerry Marshall Trophy at the 75th Members’ Meeting to make the grid for part two, the manic Gerry Marshall Sprint. By the end half the field was wrapped up in a single battle for positions inside the top ten. It’s epic stuff.
Straight-six against V12. It’s a battle for the eyes and the ears. Emanuele Pirro might have as many cylinders as the two cars he’s battling combined, but he’s also got the disadvantage of being behind them and wanting to be past. It all added up to a brilliant, almost half-the-race-long, battle for supremacy.
This is an all-American tussle. Both have mighty Ford-sourced V8s powering them, both were created under the influence of Caroll Shelby. But the Cobra Daytona Coupe has a fearless teenager at the wheel who, and there’s no other way to put this, is coming through no matter what you do. Which is exciting…
