Gallery: F1 car extravaganza at SpeedWeek

23rd October 2020

If nothing else will do but Formula 1, may we say boldly that SpeedWeek presented by Mastercard might have been the richest event at Goodwood Motor Circuit, in terms of a variety of Formula 1 machinery, we’ve ever had. Granted, celebrating 70 years of the sport sets the odds in its favour...

The 74th Members’ Meeting is up there, if your thing is ground effect. Perhaps the 2016 Goodwood Revival, if the Lotus 49 and the 3.0-litre era, is the F1 car and the F1 period for you. Here’s the thing though. Nearly every single era of F1 had some kind of representation at SpeedWeek. With no specific focus. There were of course the usual dedicated races. The Richmond and Gordon Trophies and the Glover Trophy featured for fans of the periods immediately pre- and post- transition to being mid-engined.

Then a big bonus for F1 variety at SpeedWeek was the fact that we were celebrating the 70th birthday of the classification. That meant a spread of machinery from across the history of F1, from the 1955 Maserati 250F, to a 2017 Mercedes-Benz F1 W08 EQ Power+. Significant cars, winning cars, of near-on all eras, came in between, including the Monaco-winning Cooper of Sir Stirling Moss, Jackie Stewart’s Tyrell 001, Nelson Pirquet’s Brabham BT52, Ayrton Senna’s McLaren MP4-6 and Jenson Button’s Brawn BGP 001. And breathe…

…And go on to remember that some of these among others took part in the SpeedWeek Shootout presented by Mastercard. That’s cars of all eras going flat-out for the first time on the Goodwood Motor Circuit. F1 entries included the Lotus 91, McLaren M23 and most famously, the 1989 Arrows A11. The latter with Nick Padmore pedalling set a new circuit record. If that doesn’t prove that SpeedWeek was the one-stop shop for F1 love, we’re not sure what does. We’d ask you to pick a favourite but there genuinely might be too much choice.
