Ferrari might have had a tough season in 2020, but that doesn’t mean millions of F1 fans around the world aren’t excited to see the latest scarlet machine from Maranello. This is the Ferrari SF21, Ferrari’s challenger for the 2021 Formula 1 season.
The SF21 will be driven by Ferrari’s golden boy Charles Leclerc as well as Carlos Sainz Jr., who joins the team after a two-year stint at McLaren. Former Ferrari driver and four-time World Champion Sebastian Vettel has moved on to Aston Martin.
If it looks familiar, well, it should, as the SF21, like every other F1 car lining up on the grid this year, is a development of the previous season’s machine, the SF1000; new technical rules, intended to shake up the order a little and make the racing closer have been pushed back to 2022 in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.
What’s new is the power unit, known as 065/6, which Ferrari hopes will see healthy increases in power and torque over the previous engine (the engine that saw the SF20 struggle to compete in the top 10 on many weekends in 2020 after that mysterious secret penalty agreement with the FIA), and the livery, which goes from bright red at the front to burgundy at the rear, specifically the same red that was used on Ferrari’s first racing car, the 125S, and the SF1000's at Ferrari’s 1,000th grand prix at Mugello last year. There’s also green branding for title sponsor Mission Winnow across the engine cover.
Also prominent are some small changes to the aero on the car, with a new nose tip now looking sculpted around the wing supports and new winglets sprouting from the air intake. Like many teams there has also been some serious effort to disguise the aero work on the floor at the rear of the car.
