A Hollywood documentary is in the works about Brawn GP’s incredible championship-winning season in 2009, in which Jenson Button also drove to his world driver’s title. Keanu Reeves, as well as Button himself, will be heavily involved, as both teased during the 2022 British Grand Prix.
Yes, a documentary and not a movie. Reeves, who was a guest at Silverstone this weekend, is set to fill a presenter/host role, as the series explores the details of what happened during that spectacular season. Button has hinted that he’s already begun working on the project, telling Sky Sports F1 that “there’s a lot of footage that nobody has seen as well”.
Keanu Reeves at the British GP was, by Button’s observation, getting up close and personal with the action come rain or shine rather than enjoying the “posh paddock”. Button describes Reeves as “a massive fan of the sport and really passionate about it,” so fans can rest assured the story is in capable hands.
The appeal of the Brawn GP story to Hollywood of course comes as no surprise to fans. It’s a classic underdog, David v Goliath, Phoenix rising from the ashes tale. Reeves agreed, having told Martin Brundle and Sky F1 that “there is so much to talk about. We want to tell that amazing, remarkable story. There was just so much happening in Formula 1 at that time”. He also told Brundle that he’d like to interview him for the series.
There’s no word on when fans can expect to see the finished product, though given it’s suggested the project is in its early stages, we reckon no sooner than a year from now. We’re excited to see how the documentary pans out.
