This is McLaren’s next-generation 2022 Formula 1 car, with a twist. No, the reveal date for the real thing isn’t until Friday but for now, it’s teased with the new Lego Technic McLaren Formula 1 Race Car kit. Doesn’t it just look absolutely fantastic?
Wearing the 2021 MCL35M livery, which is near-on equal parts blue and orange, the car sports a version of what will be the 2022 car’s wheel covers, in addition to the fins that go above them. We can see the now-mandated venturi tunnels for the new ground effect and the new wing.
Other than that, most technical details are unsurprisingly the reserve of the real thing. What you do get on the Lego car that you most certainly won’t on the real thing, is six visible pistons moving up and down in the engine block, connected to the wheels with gears. So yes, when you push this along, you’ll see them cycle – very cool! Not that this is in any way a kit appropriate for playing with, made for anyone under 18.
Consisting of 1,432 pieces, this kit is far from the biggest in the Lego Technic arsenal, with the Bugatti Chiron kit coming in over 3,000 pieces. It’s still a proper-sized thing when all assembled though, at 27cm wide, 65cm long and 13cm high.
The reduced piece number has a nice benefit – a reduced price. Compared to the £350-plus you’d be expected to shell out for the Bugatti, this McLaren will be just £159.99 when it goes on sale in March.
