“Even before I got into a car, I knew I was born to race.” That’s how the trailer for the new Senna drama series begins on Netflix. The voice is so good that it could very easily be Ayrton Senna himself.
What follows looks, at least on the balance of a two-and-a-half-minute trailer, actually quite good. Certainly better than the low bar our initial hopes for such a project naturally started with, given the dismal bore that was the recent Ferrari film.
The most impressive bit of this trailer is that the bits of racing shown actually look quite good (except for the one moment where a McLaren MP4/4 takes the Nouvelle Chicane at Monaco about 100mph). We can only hope that continues.
Whether the drama can match up to the trailer is another matter. How exactly it choses to portray drivers like Alain Prost and Niki Lauda (both of whom feature in this trailer) will be crucial for whether it is universally liked, or hated by some.
If the series can live up to the looks of its cars and the very passable accents of its actors, then it could well be one of the better racing representations we’ve seen. Until it’s out we will still just have to ponder whether this will be Rush or Ferrari.
We don’t have to wait too long. Senna will be on Netflix on the 29th November for us all to see, and we’ll have our thoughts on it just after that. Until then, you can watch the trailer here.
