When you think about what an F1 cars sounds like, there’s probably two things that immediately spring to mind. We very much doubt your first thought is for the modern 1.6-litre hybrid V6 engines, so we imagine you either instantly think of the Cosworth DFV or the screaming V10/V8 era on the 1990s and 2000s.
While that sound might be incredibly distinctive, it isn’t trademarked by Formula 1. There are plenty of cars over the years that could be said to have sounded “like a Formula 1 car”.
Thankfully our friends at Retroschaft (formerly known as Historic Racing HD) have put together a video of some of their favourites of the genre in a video that includes some incredible variety.
We’re not sure what the definition here is of a car “with an F1 sound” but we’re also not sure we care, because it seems to just be “they sound great”
In this video you’ll find such audio legends as the Ferrari 333SP, BMW V12 LMR and Matra MS670 as well as Group C cars, 3.0-litre sportscars and more.
