Video: How fast can a ground effect F1 car lap Goodwood?

10th March 2017
Ben Miles

The wilderness period in Goodwood's history – between the closure to modern motorsport and its glorious rebirth in 1998 – wasn't a completely barren period for the Motor Circuit. There may not have been any racing going on, but it became a hotbed for testing of all varieties.

During those years Formula 1 did visit the circuit, but never in an official capacity, so while ground effect cars almost undoubtedly did run in West Sussex during their heyday, they have never been seen by a proper audience on our hallowed tarmac.

At the 74th Members' Meeting we finally rectified that issue. Sending a stunning group of over 30 F1 cars from the period when aero was profound, but unseen, out to entertain the crowds in a stunning high speed demo.

We can't time cars during our demos, obviously, so all we can say about Bobby Verdon-Roe's astonishing lap in the brilliant white and orange McLaren MP4/1 is that it looked spectacular. And you can enjoy the whole thing in the video above!
