Today will be a good day. Do you know why? Because you’re here, watching this, a video of not one but two V8 Judd-engined Formula 1 cars screaming their way up the Hill at the Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard. Just listen to them.
The cars in question are the 1989 March CG891 and its successor the 1990 Leyton House CG901, both designed by Adrian Newey and both with 3.5-litre V8s in the middle revving to 11,500rpm. No, they weren’t successful at all in their day, with an 80 per cent failure rate for the CG891 and a 72 per cent failure rate for the CG901 (although it did manage a remarkable second place at Paul Ricard in the hands of Ivan Capelli). But it’s fun to watch the Adrian Newey at the wheel of both of these cars 30 years on, and to hear those stunning motors stretch their legs.
Welcome to Goodwood Elevenses, a mid-morning helping of motoring-related amusement to help break up your day. Watch the last video: Ragging a 680PS 911 GT2 up a hill aged 71
