Video: Massage your ears with a Ferrari F1 V12

From time to time you’ll hear a modern car that sounds delightful – even with turbocharging there are some seriously meaty exhaust notes out there. But many old cars are in a different league compared to their current counterparts. Case in point, this BMS Dallara 192 sounds downright filthy. Why? Because it has a Ferrari V12.

BMS Scuderia Italia is an Italian racing team that made the jump from the Italian Rally Championship and World Touring Car Championship to F1 for 1988. It was a midfield team, make no mistakes about it, but having used Ford and Judd engines for four years BMS joined forces with Ferrari for what it hoped would be a stronger season. It wasn’t. The Dallara 192 in the hands of JJ Letho and Pierluigi Martina scored only two points, with two sixth place finished courtesy of Martini.

Fast forward to today, though, and how quick the 192 was matters not. Because listen to it. The engine is a Ferrari Tipo 037, a 3.5-litre naturally aspirated V12 with 720PS (530kW). And this being the early nineties, power was sent through a six-speed manual gearbox. Glorious.

As for this car? Well it was the points scorer from 1992, chassis 026, but once it retired from racing it ran only a handful of times. That is until it was bought in 2017 by a Brit with clearly very strong eardrums. Whoever you are, thank you a million times over.
