The job of the producers of Formula 1: Drive to Survive, the smash hit Netflix series following the inner workings of the Formula 1 circuit, is to try and bring that astonishing season to life on the small screen.
Previous seasons have been filled with drama and controversy, while also being accused of amping up the drama where there was none. While the 2021 season provided plenty of real drama, there is a real question how the producers will have managed to follow the title fight with zero access to Max Verstappen.
This new trailer, following the teaser released earlier in the month, gives very real few clues as to how it will do that, but shows that the season will again focus on some of the names we have come to know through the season.
Lando Norris is shown saying he has no sympathy for another driver just after team-mate Daniel Ricciardo is shown suffering a poor race, suggesting we may be in for some McLaren in-team drama in season four. Carlos Sainz Jr. and Charles Leclerc have a small “bromance” moment and Guenther Steiner is shown.
Lewis Hamilton features in interviews, while it is clear title rival Verstappen will be followed from afar and the place of Red Bull in season four will again be taken by Christian Horner – a centrepiece of ever season of Drive to Survive so far.
What the trailer has in dramatic music and racing action it does seem to lack in new footage. With very little other than the team bosses and, for some reason, Susie Wolff, shown of what Netflix has managed to capture. Presumably that’ll be increased for the actual series.
The new season of F1 drive to survive will launch on Friday 11th March 11, just a few days before the new F1 season and in the middle of Formula 1’s only pre-season test.
Our one remaining question now isn’t how will the amp up the drama more than ever this year, it’s simply “who made George Russell cry at 2:06?”
