Are you excited for the 2022 Festival of Speed? Of course you are, and so are we. There’s so much to look forward to, including having an array of current and former F1 drivers on the Hill. And so looking ahead to the 2022 Festival got us thinking once more about 2021, and the F1 heroes who got the hammer down in Formula 1 and other racing machinery. Would it shock you if we said they all drove quite quickly?
We have to start with 1969 Indy 500 winner and 1984 F1 champion Mario Andretti, driving the Ferrari 512S he drove to victory at the 1970 Sebring 12 Hours and 1972 Daytona Six Hours. Then we have two-time F1 champ Emerson Fittipaldi driving the Lotus 72D that won him the 1972 crown. There’s also Goodwood regular, former F1 man and five-time Le Mans winner Emanuele Pirro blasting along in a Ferrari 250 GT SWB Breadvan, and 2009 F1 champion Jenson Button in Keke Rosberg’s 1982 title-winning Williams FW08.
From the current F1 grid we have Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo in Ayrton Senna’s title-winning McLaren MP4/5B, revving out its incredible V10 engine, and then Alex Albon in the Red Bull RB7 that took Sebastian Vettel to the 2011 world championship. Then there’s former F1 drivers Anthony Davidson and Esteban Gutierrez in the Mercedes AMG-F1 W11, the car in which Lewis Hamilton claimed his record-equalling seventh F1 drivers’ title and the most modern F1 car we’ve had so far at Goodwood. Not a bad selection, wouldn’t you say?
Which F1 drivers are coming to the 2022 Festival of Speed? Well that would be telling, wouldn’t it… We’ll have news very soon.
