Within the first five seconds of watching this video it was hard not to utter an expletive. This is Silverstone, Friday 3rd June 2005, and it’s F1 testing. Prepare your ears for a V10 onslaught that’s hard to comprehend.
The first howl is so loud you think the car is surely about to fly past the camera. But no, there’s a hard brake and another burst of acceleration before it comes hurtling past, what appears to be the Toyota TF105 of Ralph Schumacher or Jarno Trulli. It’s 2005, so it’s hardly 4K video… The individual behind the camera is standing at what was the outside of Bridge corner back in the day, a fast right hander, and a vantage point that gives a cracking view of the following left for Priory, another left for Brooklands, then a right for Luffied.
After the Toyota comes car after car, from the familiar liveries of Ferrari, Red Bull, McLaren, Williams and Renault, to Honda, Sauber, Minardi and Jordan. It’s just under five minutes of V10 heaven, finished off with a look inside the McLaren garage as Juan Pablo Montoya’s MP4-20 roars into life and exits the pits. Delightful.
