Seeing cars stream past at the Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard, tyres screeching, engines blaring, is a pulse-raising experience. Sadly as spectators we’re probably not where we’d really want to be in an ideal world. That place is, of course, in the car.
Some consolation, however, is that we do our best to stick GoPros to pretty much everything we can, which in turn means we can create videos like this: an eight-minute compilation of some of our favourite onboards from the 2019 Festival.
Who needs coffee when you’ve got the insanely raw V12 from the 1992 Minardi M191B to listen to? Or when you can sit about an inch behind Ken Block’s ear as he throws his 700 horsepower Ford Escort Cosworth COSSIE sideways in front of Goodwood House? There’s an onboard here with Valtteri Bottas in the championship-winning Mercedes-AMG F1 W08, too, and with Romain Dumas as he takes the all-electric Volkswagen ID.R up the Hill faster than anyone else in history.
Our favourite moment, though, isn’t the loudest or the wildest. It’s the moment when Sir Jackie Stewart stopped halfway up the Hill to give a rose to his wife Lady Helen from his Matra-Cosworth MS80-02.
If you like onboards, maybe you'll like this crazy lap of Monza with a jet-engined Le Mans car, the Howmet TX?
