Whenever we go to an event we take some time to wander through the paddocks, to get up close and personal with racing icons. The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion is no different, and my goodness are the Laguna Seca paddocks jam-packed with motorsport legends.
There’s European machinery, of course; you’ll find everything from a Bugatti Type 35 and Porsche 356, to a Ferrari 250 GT SWB and Jaguar XJR16. The on-track action covers everything from Formula 1 to Le Mans, Formula Juniors to saloons.
Lovely though those cars are, it’s the American racers, the cars we seldom see in the UK, that are truly blowing our minds. Tucked away in various paddock shelters we’ve seen a Pontiac Firebird Trans-Am, a Mercury Merkur, an AMC Javelin, an Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, a Buick Somerset, plus countless Mustangs, Corvettes, Camaros, Cobras. Presented with several dozen Trans-Am and IMSA monsters, we’re going weak at the knees.
