Grab a Porsche Le Mans car for £100k

Fancy a Porsche 919 LMP1 Le Mans prototype racer for £100,000? If you smell a rat, yes that is a bit cheap. There is indeed a catch.

It’s not a real 919 Hybrid, inch-perfect a recreation as it is. It is in fact one of the many models commissioned by Porsche for display at various dealerships, races, motor shows, experience centres and the Porsche Museum.

It’s a CAD data-based fibreglass body draped over a steel frame. Don’t be fooled by the comparative lack of sophistication, though. Bereft of a hybridised V4 engine and carbon composite construction though it is, it remains a rare bird. Porsche built just 13 of these display models in 2014. This one owes its resemblance to the Le Mans-winning 2015 car, as driven to victory by Earl Bamber, Nick Tandy and Nico Hülkenberg.

So if you’re a bit of a well-heeled Porsche person, perhaps with a few GT3s, a Carrera GT and a 918 in the garage, this 919 display model could be the perfect ornament for your garage, at roughly one-thirtieth the cost of a real one. The model is available with RM Sotheby’s in its Open Roads event (21st-29th April 2021). It’s expected to go for between £68,000 and £103,000.
