It’s always impressive watching modern WRC at the highest level. Revelling in the skills of the best drivers in the world as they tackle changing conditions and variable road surfaces, all while maintaining absolute control as they teeter over the edge of a cliff, will always be exhilarating.
However, there is one element where it can be improved. Jeopardy. Yes, my description does sound like there is already quite a lot of jeopardy, but it will always be more entertaining when you add that extra spicy element of ‘amateurism.’
Similar to football, the idea that the drivers don’t really have a full grasp on what they’re doing will always make it more exciting for the crowd. Sure, the Champions League final is a fantastic showcase of talent and skill, but if you’re watching a Sunday League match where one of the players is known as ‘a bit of a hard man’ and the goalkeeper is carrying a little extra timber, then you’re definitely more invested in the outcome.
When you take that amateur element to the rally world, it results in a European countryside, a few cars parked within range of oncoming rally cars, and some extremely questionable corner entry speeds. Add all the elements together and you have 12 minutes of pure, unadulterated, edge of the seat entertainment.
