If there’s one era of Formula 1 cars that’s absolutely unmistakable by its silhouette, at least for the most part, it’s the high-airbox era of the early 1970s. There’s no mistaking the Lotuses, McLaren’s, Tyrrells, Shadows and more.
Stuart Hall made a fantastic leap into a strong lead from pole position in his McLaren M23, with Marco Werner giving chase in the JPS-liveried Lotus 76. There were a few prangs and turnarounds, with the Penske PC4 turning to face the bay on the way into Rascasse. Werner retired his car with an issue leaving the pursuing Nick Padmore-driven Lotus to take up second place, with Michael Lyons in the McLaren M26 taking up the third podium position. Hall, though, even with traffic, was clear, in spite of reportedly battling gearbox issues.
