The sound of a Subaru boxer engine is unique. Porsche’s four-cylinders aren’t 1,000,000 miles away, but 99 per cent of the time you’ll hear that flat-four sound, say to yourself “Subaru” and seconds later be treated to a Scoobie firing into view. With this one, the exhaust is so loud you’d hear it from the International Space Station and cornering speeds so high we’re surprised the tyres aren’t flying off the wheels.
This is Damien Bradley’s Mk1 Legacy, a car that uses an Impreza 22B engine as its starting point but, thanks to a new turbocharger and a number of other modifications, now pushes 700PS (515kW). Power goes to all four wheels via a six-speed sequential box and there are whopping great Alcon brakes to haul the car to a stop. It’s the noise we love, though – the best of the Subaru boxer four but with an extra helping of noise and menace. Top work, Damien.
