You might have heard of Keiichi Tsuchiya before. He’s the original drift king, a man so good at going sideways he’s credited with shining the spotlight on drifting as a sport. Well today we get to climb onboard a Toyota AE86 with him, but not for a series of insane slides but a seriously hot lap of Tsukuba circuit in Japan.
Brilliant though Tsuchiya is at applying opposite lock, he’s pretty handy keeping cars on the straight and narrow, too, as two class wins at Le Mans and a number of other big wins and championships to his name attest. His footwork here is stunning – the speed at which he blips the throttle going down through the gears is ridiculous, and going through some of Tsukuba’s high speed corners you can tell the car is right on the edge. The engine revving out to 9,000rpm is pretty delicious, too. What a way to start the day.
