This isn’t your usual onboard… It’s a spectacular showcase of exactly what a classic racing car's tyrewall undergoes during a lap of the Virginia International Raceway.
Filmed from the tyre of second place pro-am duo Bill Elliott and Dennis Olthoff’s 1970 Ford Boss 302 Mustang, the minute-and-a-half-long clip shows how a tyre really behaves under the massive stresses its put under mid race.
Watch as it oscillates on the rim as various pressures are applied, flexing wildly as the car corners and accelerates. At half-a-minute in it even starts to smoke, as the engine note reaches a crescendo. Listen as the 5.0-litre V8 growls and hums its way around the 3.27-mile circuit, speeding through its 17 corners. Thanks to its huge engine, and a healthy dose of talent behind the wheel, the Boss Mustang retains its leading position, keeping the same cars on its flank for the entire clip... Cars that include Chevrolet Corvette Stringrays – both C2 and C3 models – AC Cobras and a Camaro SS.
