I’m going to shock you here. I, that is me, the writer of this article, not Goodwood or Goodwood Road & Racing as entities, do not think the Mazda 787B sounds good.
Yep, get your pitchforks out, hunt me down, slander my name all over social media, I really do not enjoy the sound that the Mazda 787B makes. I’ve heard it in person multiple times and my position has remained steadfast.
That is not to say I don’t think it makes an impressive sound. I just don’t enjoy it. I’ve been to Le Mans 11 times and the loudest car I’ve ever heard there was the 787B doing some demo laps. You could hear it from a literal mile away.
The scream is wild, it cuts right through you and vibrates your eardrums if you’re not careful. People adore it and I can absolutely see why they do – but it’s not a sound for me.
So, as a present for having read the grumblings of a man with delicate little ears, I give you this four-minute compilation of just videos of the Mazda 787B making its ungodly noise over and over and over again, all over the world.
You are welcome. And if it makes you feel better, remember I had to listen to this video to write it up.
