Hockenheim used to be better. GT racing used to be better. Let’s just throw all modern racing in the bin and watch old motorsport on YouTube.
That’s not true obviously, but it only takes a couple of minutes of watching classic 1990s GT1 cars scream around the old super fast surrounds of Hockenheim to start thinking about how “fings ain’t wot they used ter be”.
At the time the FIA GT Championship was approaching its apex. GT cars that were pretty much prototypes from Mercedes, Porsche, McLaren, Panoz and Lotus and some awesome GT2 cars. It really was absolutely brilliant (especially if, like me, you were nine).
The truth is, that in the seasons after this GT1 racing fell apart under a massive bill for these incredibly complicated machines. It didn’t last more than two seasons more before dying. But we can forget that, and just enjoy how amazing the FIA GT Championship was at its GT1 zenith.
