Video: Low-Drag Jaguar E-Type prowls up the Goodwood Hill
Jaguar E-types are beautiful, and for some the E-type is the best looking car of all time. But while they aren’t two-a-penny they aren’t the rarest machines in the world. The E-type Lightweight, though? Very rare. A E-type Lightweight low-drag? So rare you may well never see one. That is unless you were at the Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard in 2011.
Just 12 E-type Lightweights were built, of which only two were given the ‘low-drag’ treatment, and this is one of them. ‘49 FXN’ first raced in 1963, joint-owned and raced by Peter Lumsden and Peter Sargent, and raced all over the world, including Goodwood, the Nürburgring and Le Mans, with a second in class and sixth overall at La Sarthe in 1964.. The low-drag roof was even tested up and down the M1 motorway (what a very different time it was…), and came home in second place at the 2005 Revival’s RAC TT Celebration.
Quite the machine, then, and as you’ll hear it makes quite some noise…
