It’s been quite a remarkable start to 2024 for veteran rally champion Carlos Sainz. Over 30 years on from his victories with Toyota in 1990 and 1992, the 62 year-old legend can add another trophy to his cabinet: the one signifying his victory at the 2024 Dakar rally with Audi. The win was his fourth car class victory at the off-road extravaganza, in which he’s been participating on and off since 2006.
Today, though, we celebrate the enduring and varied talents of Sainz by revisiting his WRC days, post-Toyota glory, in the 1990s with Subaru. It’s 1995, we’re in a Subaru Impreza and Sainz is catapulting has way up a tarmac stage at Rallye Catalunya.
Following a gloriously 1990s VHS intro, we’re thrown in to an over-the-shoulder view of Sainz tossing the wheel this way and that, hooking the Subaru into the gutters of this Catalunyan stage. At points it looks as if the whole thing is on fast forward as Sainz and the Subaru collaborate to bend the laws of physics.
