There haven’t been many Mexican F1 drivers. In fact, there have been six: Ricardo Rodríguez, Moisés Solana, Pedro Rodríguez, Héctor Rebaque, Esteban Gutiérrez and, of course, current Red Bull man Sergio Pérez. So when the owner of a BRM P153, raced by Pedro Rodríguez in 1970, asked Gutiérrez if he’d like to drive one of his hero’s cars at the Monaco Historic Grand Prix, what do you think he said? As you can tell by the title of this video, it was an emphatic yes.
Gutiérrez raced for three full seasons in Formula 1, from 2013 to 2016, the transition period from 2.4-litre V8s to 1.6-litre V6 hybrids. This P153 that he spanked around Monaco has a 3.0-litre V12 and a five-speed manual gearbox, so this was an altogether different experience for the young Mexican, bolting his way up and down through the gears and stretching the engine’s vocal chords. Do you think he enjoyed it?
