Within the first 10 seconds of this video we’re in flat-six Porsche heaven. It’s a Porsche 910, it’s an onboard, it’s Goodwood – need we say more?
The driver is Rainer Becker, the car is chassis 910-020, which raced in period from 1968 to ’70 in the 1,000km races at Monza, Paris, Spa, Nürburgring, Brands Hatch and Zeltweg, and in 17 other races all over the world. More recently it’s fought in the Whitsun Trophy at the Goodwood Revival and, of course, here it is careering up the Hill at the 2018 Festival of Speed. The sound is unbelievable, Rainer flying away from the line in first, changing up to second, then braking hard for the first corner. When he feathers the throttle on corner entry there’s a sumptuous burble from the exhaust before Rainer is flat on the gas again, lifting for the second corner, powering through, changing to third before Goodwood House and moving up to fourth for the run to Molecomb. This is not a gentle drive.
What’s fantastic is that the camera keeps running even after the run is over. Rainer gets to the turning circle at the top of the Hill, sees some friends and pumps his fist with excitement. Then we ride along as Rainer heads back down the Hill, door open, before pulling up outside Goodwood House with the most insane group of Porsches you could imagine as part of the company’s 75th anniversary celebration moment. Rainer even takes the camera out of the car to have a wander, ogling at the others cars surrounding the Central Feature. What a video.
