There has probably never been a racing driver who knew Goodwood as well as Sir Stirling Moss, who passed away on Easter Sunday. Stirling raced at Goodwood 56 times, and won 21 of those races. Here we see him in action at the Goodwood Revival in 2007.
Moss is at the wheel of a Lotus Cortina in the St Mary’s Trophy. Although you cannot see him in full it’s clearly Stirling, the style – all elbows out, yet somehow casual – couldn’t be anyone else. The white gloves and open, peaked helmet are also very Moss.
And, despite this being filmed when Moss was well into his 70s, he clearly still had it; hustling his Cortina around the circuit with consummate ease. But he’s still a gentleman to the very last. As he passes another Cortina, following a much better run out of Lavant, he dispatches a cheery wave of thanks to his fellow competitor.
We will not see his like again.
