Age is only but a number, right? Well, if there is anyone proving that sentiment, it is Rupert Schwaiger. Where most 71-year-olds are spending their weekends in a solid pair of slippers, reading the paper and waving their fists at youths driving too fast, Mr Schwaiger is setting some of the fastest times at the most prestigious hill climb events.
Oh yes, he’s not just making up the numbers as a novelty guest. No, he’s driving this absolutely brutal 993 Porsche 911 GT2 up the hill. That engine you can hear rip-snorting its way up Italian and Croatian hillsides is a twin-turbo 3.5-litre air-cooled flat-six producing 679PS (499kW) and 850Nm (629lb ft) to the rear wheels.
That’s a bit of a handful for anyone, but Rupert is showing up the younger generation of hillclimbers by finishing in the top-10 in each of these four events shown in the video.
We’re not sure where we will be at 71-years-old, but we can only hope to have a small fraction of the energy and driving talent that Rupert Schwaiger has. We salute you sir.
