The Spa Classic is always a great opportunity to experience spectacular racing cars at an equally legendary venue. Once such car was this, a Ferrari 512 BB LM with its utterly brilliant 4.9-litre flat-12 engine roaring and echoing through the Belgian countryside.
Cars like this are the only real chance we have to remember just what a challenge the Spa-Francorchamps circuit really is. Modern-day Formula 1 cars pretty much ignore the monumental climb through Eau Rouge and Raidillon, but in this, a car that relies almost solely on mechanical grip, it is an altogether different spectacle.
While the 512 BB LM sounds fantastic from the outside, we experienced it first-hand at this year’s Spa Classic, we can get some sense of exactly how it must sound from the inside with this brilliant onboard footage.
There’s rarely a dull moment as you can just sense there is a constant risk of the rear end breaking free under the strain of around 470PS (346kW), while the driver has to work overtime on the wheel alongside shifting through that glorious H-pattern manual.
