Today, 14th May, would have been Sabine Schmitz’s birthday, so we’re going to remember her at her best.
Here the Queen of the Nürburgring demonstrates exactly why she was deemed worthy of her crown. Witness pure racing genius as Sabine calmly pilots her Porsche 911 GT3 R past car after car. Very few drivers dare navigate the Green Hell with such abandon, especially in such wet conditions: but that’s what made Sabine special.
Even before winning the hearts of the British public on Top Gear she was known as a devastatingly talented driver. She was the first female driver to win the Nürburgring 24 Hours in 1996 and returned to repeat the feat in ’97. Doubtless she could beat the boys around her home track whether it was in a BMW M5 ’Ring Taxi or a Transit van. Forever Queen of the Nürburgring!
