If you’ve never experienced Can-Am cars before, allows us to give those wearing headphones a quick sound warning, because these things are brutal. The car in this video, courtesy of Belgian Motorsport, is a Shadow Mk1 similar to what we’ll see in action during the Can-Am demonstration at the 81st Members’ Meeting presented by Audrain Motorsport, and we’re not sure you have enough fingers to put in your ears to keep the noise out.
It's powered by an 8.1-litre Chevrolet V8 producing in excess of 700PS (522kW) and 888Nm (655lb ft) of torque, all of which is being sent directly to the rear wheels for what we’re sure is an alarming sensation of acceleration from behind the wheel.
We’ve spent an awful lot of time lately wondering just how it must feel to drive one of these cars. It must be absolutely immense. Not only the near limitless straight-line performance that these cars were famous for, but the bone-shaking sound emanating from those trumpets that are standing directly behind the cockpit.
Despite their enormous size, they’re incredibly lightweight, too. This Shadow Mk1 weighs just 800kg, which must make it absolutely electrifying at all times, whether that’s under acceleration, or through corners. They look utterly ludicrous from the outside, but these were properly engineered pieces of kit at the very forefront of contemporary design.
They are going to be absolutely spectacular on the Goodwood Motor Circuit at the 81st Members’ Meeting, and we cannot wait to experience such a wide variety of Shadows, McLarens, Porsches and more.
