The Spa Classic is a bucket list trip for every car nut. From the Panoz Esperante to the BMW 3.0 CSL, there’s eye candy everywhere, and plenty of on-track action throughout the weekend.
While the GRR team were spoiled for choice at last weekend’s event, this pole-placing 1979 BMW M1 Procar caught our eye in particular. And pilot Sam Hancock was kind enough to share his onboard footage with us post-qualy.
Racing in the Classic Endurance Racing II category, the M1 joined the likes of Lola T cars, Ferrari 512 BBLMs and the rarer Rondeau M378.
Watch from behind the wheel as Hancock flies out of La Source and down into Eau Rouge, hot on the tail of a Cosworth-engined TOJ SC 304, piloted by Yves Scemama, which had just overtaken him. As he comes out of Pouhon, Hancocks pips past another M1, driven by Peter Muelder, before passing a Porsche 934 straight out of the Chicane.
Hancock went on to take the Procar to pole position, proving that the much-loved M1 still has what it takes on track.
