Today is 30 years since three-time Formula 1 World Champion Ayrton Senna tragically died during the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix. Being such a beloved driver of his period and given the shock of the event three decades ago, the great Brazilian man will be on the minds of many race fans, especially as today, Netflix has released the first teaser trailer for its limited series chronicling his life in motorsport.
The trailer opens showing Senna, played by Brazilian actor Gabriel Leone, sitting in his McLaren-Honda MP4/6 in the pits at the 1991 Brazilian Grand Prix. He is as he was often seen, deep in thought, as his team buzzed around him preparing the car. We see his lid go on and his visor go down in preparation for the race to start.
There are plenty of quick shots, close-ups, as the cars scream round and flashbacks begin, of his childhood, of his run-ins with Alain Prost and more. Rain comes down as we see moments from his previous drives.
A point of criticism to note from our perspective largely come down to sound design. The MP4/6 famously used a Honda V12 and rarely has that sound about it, with a front-on view on track at one point dubbed over with a Judd V8. Hopefully it’s all as it should be when the show debuts later this year but other than that, count us excited…
